Meat and Dairy Groups Come Out Against Using Downers for Meat

April 23, 2008

Ever since Howard Lyman appeared on Oprah Winfrey more than a decade ago, there have been increasing calls to stop allowing downed cattle to enter the US meat supply. And all along the way, key meat and dairy trade groups have bitterly opposed this measure. Well, they’ve finally relented. A breaking Associated Press story says that The American Meat Institute, the National Meat Association and the National Milk Producers Federation have joined up to call for a ban. Says Jeremy Russel, of the National Meat Associaton:

We want to send a clear message to consumers that we’re putting their welfare and concerns ahead of the economics.

If they wanted to send a clear message, they would have done this ten years ago. The reality is that downer cattle have become too big of a liability for agribusiness to manage. Link.
