As a result of the mass arrests at America’s largest kosher slaughterhouse, there may soon be widespread shortages of kosher beef. Once I found out about this potential shortage, I did a search and found this article from Thursday. It provides some of the best reporting I’ve yet seen about the Agriprocessors arrests. And it includes this quote from a Rabbi:
For too long, we’ve ignored that production of kosher food has taken place in a world where we’re concerned about the ritual aspects of food preparation and not the ethical considerations.
Hopefully the meat shortage, and the reasons behind it, will provide a catalyst for the Jewish community to examine the current standards under which kosher meat is produced. And anyway, the most reliable way to keep kosher is to avoid animal products entirely — there’s no need to keep meat and milk separate, or to worry about whether these foods are produced in compliance with kosher law, if you’re not eating them in the first place.
