32 Monkeys Die in Research Lab from Accidental Overheating

August 7, 2008

You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. I can’t think of a more agonizing way to die.

That something like this could possibly happen undercuts every single assurance that researchers make regarding the welfare of the animals they use.

None of the blame for this debacle falls onto the shoulders of AR people — it falls squarely onto the shoulders of every single scientist, and every single lab, that researches on animals. The question to ask is: what is the animal research community going to do to ensure that, beyond a shadow of a doubt, nothing like this could ever possibly happen again?

If the animal research community doesn’t decisively answer this question and take clear action, nothing they say about animal welfare should ever be taken seriously.

One last little point: guess when this incident happened? May 28. Now tell me they weren’t trying to cover this up. Link.
