I asked Paul how Vegan.com readers could step up to make a difference for California Prop 2. Here’s his response:
Egg Industry magazine calls it, “one of the biggest and most important battles of U.S. egg industry history.” The president of the United Egg Producers asserts, “We are in a battle to save our industry. We have to be united.”
Agribusiness giant Foster Farms has contributed a quarter million dollars to try to defeat it, and the egg factory farming subsidiary of Land-O-Lakes gave even more. In all, opponents claim they intend to spend $10-50 million dollars to fight it.
What could be so threatening to the agribusiness industry to elicit such apocalyptic proclamations and huge spending? It’s California’s Prop 2 – a modest anti-cruelty measure that California voters will consider this Election Day.
The latest poll shows Prop 2 with the widest margin of support of any currently-polled California ballot measure. But even popular ballot measures can be—and routinely are—defeated when opponents have millions of dollars to spend in order to confuse and mislead voters.
Right now, the YES! on Prop 2 Campaign is focused on three areas: endorsement-gathering, fundraising, and volunteering to get out the vote. Get involved and help make history for farm animals!
Whether or not you live in California, you are needed to help make history. Are you answering the call?
