(Via Paul) Yet another piece showing how clueless animal agriculture is in coming to grips with animal cruelty. This unsigned editorial in the Capital Press is poorly written and makes ludicrous arguments against Proposition 2. In fact, some of the quotes must be seen to be believed. Like this one:
If this proposition is not stopped now, not only will the public pay a higher price for food, the public could ultimately lose the choice of eating meat.
Yep, because once society requires that animals are given enough space to turn around, we’re only a hop, skip, and a jump away from banning meat.
The piece ends with the common but ridiculous argument that consumer choice and the free market will somehow acceptably solve the issues of farmed animal care. Isn’t reliance on the free market, and the lack of even the most basic welfare regulations, precisely what led to universally horrific factory farm conditions? Link.
