Piglets in Germany

October 3, 2008

Encouraging news from my German friend Mahi Klosterhalfen:

I’m pleased to inform you that from next year on male piglets in Germany will receive pain killers before being castrated. More than 22 million animals will benefit from this every single year.

Most credit for this victory goes to the Tierschutzbund who ran a campaign on the subject. PROVIEH (a German partner of CIWF) was also involved.

It’s barbaric that, for pigs and cattle alike, castration without even local anesthetic is still standard practice throughout North America and most of the rest of the world. But the tide is obviously starting to turn.
