The Washington Times has a surprisingly good article about the backlash to Rush Limbaugh’s recent statements opposing animal cruelty.
Since Limbaugh recorded two PSAs for HSUS two weeks ago, 28 hunting groups have united to express their opposition. What’s funny is that Limbaugh’s PSA’s had nothing to do with hunting: one spot was against animal fighting, and the other linked religion to the compassionate treatment of animals.
But the hunters know that having a top conservative voice come out in support of HSUS is poison to their cause. There are really only two strategies that are open to them. If they were smart, they would find common ground with Limbaugh and HSUS on animal issues that don’t concern hunting, thereby coming off as reasonable people who are opponents of cruelty.
But, happily for the animals, the hunting groups are obviously being run by morons. So they’re taking a scorched earth approach, thinking that somehow they can persuade Limbaugh to adapt their hardline anti-animal position. Not gonna happen. Once someone accepts a certain practice as being cruel to animals, the chance that they’ll see things otherwise plunges to zero. (Thanks, Kevin.) Link.
Update: Washington Times link fixed (Thanks, Scott).
