Iowa to Exclude Public Comment on Factory Farms

August 4, 2009

In Iowa, before a factory farm can be built, the plan must be approved by the state’s Environmental Protection Commission (EPC). Until now, the Commission accepted testimony from neighbors and other entities that might be affected by the farm’s construction.

That process has proven to be too damned democratic, so the EPC has written up a rule whereby it will no longer have to consider public comment during the approval process.

Who needs democracy, when there are pigs to be raised and money to be made? (Thanks, Bea.) Link.
