Food Industry’s “Smart Choices” Program Under Fire

October 15, 2009

I’ve written here and here about the convenience food industry’s dubious insane “Smart Choices” program. Well, it turns out that Connecticut’s Attorney General, Richard Blumenthal, shares my sentiments, and is demanding an explanation from the food companies, undoubtedly as a precursor to a lawsuit.

Blumenthal has called the program, “overly simplistic, inaccurate and ultimately misleading,” and he told the New York Times:

As a matter of common sense, these sugar-laden or fat-saturated products seem very questionable as so-called ‘Smart Choices’ nutritionally. We’re ratcheting up pressure for truthful answers to these issues.

I think the Smart Choices brand has already become so tarnished that Blumenthal’s inquiry will deliver a fatal blow to the initiative. (Via Bittman.) Link.
