When Your Veggie Burrito Isn’t

May 7, 2010

There are some very unhappy vegetarian Mexican food lovers in Manhattan. A successful new burrito joint has been selling “basic” bean and rice burritos without disclosing that the rice contains chicken stock. Co-owner Leo Kremer admits:

The signage is completely misleading, that was totally our fault.

Kremer further claims:

In the [San Francisco] Bay Area, a lot of places do put chicken stock in their rice and they don’t tell anyone.

I wouldn’t bet against that assertion.

While I philosophically prefer independent restaurants to chains, I think independent restaurants are far more likely to not disclose their use of animal ingredients. With chain restaurants, all locations prepare their food with the same ingredients—and these ingredient lists are often conveniently posted online. If I’m traveling, I’d much rather eat at a Chipotle Mexican Grill than at a random independent Mexican restaurant. (Via Village Voice.) Link.
