Animal Aid’s October video revealing widespread acts of sadism and incompetence at UK slaughterhouses has led to important reforms. Thursday’s Guardian reports that five major UK supermarkets have announced plans to require independently monitored video cameras at their meat suppliers.
Little by little, the world’s meat industry is moving towards what it fears most: transparency and accountability. Now, with this precedent set, the pressure shifts to American supermarkets to enact comparable measures.
The next step will be convincing these companies to stream their slaughterhouse video online—an easier concession than it may sound, as it’s something meat eaters will certainly demand. The industry is now sliding down a slippery slope that’s good for animals and potentially disastrous to its future. (Via Stallwood.) Link.
