The Chinese courts have come up with an innovative way to address food safety lapses: they kill the people responsible. One of the guys at the center of China’s melamine scandal has just been sentenced to death; another has been given life imprisonment.
This is wrong and draconian and thuggish. But you’ve got to give it to the Chinese legal system; at least they don’t fuck around when it comes to picking out a blamable manager and going all Old Testament on his ass. If worldwide food safety enforcement could split the difference between China’s bloodthirsty practices and the castrated approach to food safety taken by the West, the world would be a better place. Update: The BBC has a longer and more detailed piece on the sentencing. Two people have now received a death sentence, with a third receiving a suspended death sentence, while a handful of others have drawn lengthy prison terms. Link.
