Outstanding Boston Globe article on “hegans”—male vegans.
This article really struck a chord with me. Broadly speaking, there are at least three things that make veganism less appealing for men than women: lack of cooking skills; body image issues, and misconceptions about protein. And I think that helps to explain why the ratio of vegan women to men is something like three or four to one.
It’s great to see an article address this subject head-on, and in such a positive manner. As a community, vegans have never developed outreach materials specifically for men. Given that half the population—the male half—has proven itself vastly less likely to embrace vegan eating, it looks like an effort to target men with customized outreach campaigns could pay off big.
