Just two days before Thanksgiving, the Humane Society of the United States has just posted a short undercover video documenting horrific animal cruelty at America’s largest turkey hatchery. It’s yet another confirmation that there are horrendous cruelties throughout animal agribusiness that occur virtually everywhere you could possibly look.
To me, the most striking nugget of information is that this particular plant often has more newly-hatched turkeys than orders from grow-houses. So any leftover hatchlings are, at the end of the day, wheeled over to a grinder and tossed—perfectly healthy and fully conscious—down the chute.
I’ve spent so many years covering animal agribusiness that, even though this particular detail is news to me, I have to say I’m not the slightest bit surprised.
The investigation was only released this morning, but already it has drawn coverage in the Minnesota Star Tribune.
If you’ve got Facebook or Twitter accounts you must share this story: it’s something that everyone who plans to eat turkey this Thanksgiving needs to see. Link.
