The Jewish Week has a long and excellent piece on the growing pressure within the Kosher-keeping community to boycott Agriprocessors beef. This is a company with a long history of animal abuse, and which is alleged to have systematically engaged in worker mistreatment. Says one rabbi:
We go wrong when we think of Judaic practice as only fulfilling technical conditions. It’s about sanctifying life. This to me is a very powerful, clear example of how people can fulfill technical conditions but still be scoundrels with the Torah’s permission, as Nachmanides said.
Agriprocessors, meanwhile, keeps proclaiming its innocence. Says one member of the owning family: “Do you think we’re slave drivers over here?”
