SeaWorld was fined $75,000 for a “willful” safety violation, as well as two other lapses, surrounding the death of its trainer last year. Additionally, it looks like Tilikum, the whale who killed the trainer, will never again be permitted any contact with any other person or animal. So, basically, an already-disturbed intelligent animal will spend the rest of her life in isolation-style conditions that will guarantee serious mental illness.
$75,000 is peanuts for SeaWorld, so it’s back to business as usual. On top of that, SeaWorld is appealing the fine: a spokesman says, “SeaWorld disagrees with the unfounded allegations made by OSHA today.” Link.
