Whether you’re a vegan or an omnivore, it’s probably not a bad idea to cut back on your salt intake. The New York Times summarizes the findings from a large new study:
…lowering the amount of salt people eat by even a small amount could reduce cases of heart disease, stroke and heart attacks as much as reductions in smoking, obesity and cholesterol levels.
I’ve gotten into the habit of checking the sodium content on the processed foods I eat, and I only rarely eat canned soups anymore since they tend to be loaded with salt.
Note that dairy products and table salt are two of the biggest sources of iodine for many people. So if you’re a vegan who’s using little or no iodized table salt, it’s wise to make sure you’re taking a multivitamin or other supplement that contains iodine. Link.
