Another helpful reminder that the meat industry will fight tooth and nail against any law that seeks to prevent cruelty to farmed animals. The Humane Society issued a press release this morning that begins:
The U.S. Supreme Court struck down most provisions of California’s downed animal law, effectively stripping the states of any authority to protect our food supply and the welfare of animals from the slaughterhouse industry and the dealers and producers who work with them.
This is an ugly ruling that will greatly reduce the extent to which it’s possible to protect animals from cruelty on a state-by-state basis. And, since this ruling comes from the Supreme Court, it’s not going to be overturned in the foreseeable future.
The calculus of how much money should be spent seeking anti-cruelty legislation vs. how much should be spent on vegan advocacy has just shifted toward advocacy. Links: HSUS press release. Sac Bee coverage.
Update: CNN is currently featuring the story on its front page, and its coverage is the best I’ve seen so far.
