I’ve been gleefully covering the bust and subsequent closure of The Hump, the Santa Monica sushi restaurant nailed for illegally serving whale meat. The Washington Post published an important follow-up story this week: where do you suppose The Hump’s whale meat was coming from? Turns out that DNA tests reveal the meat came from a whale killed by Japan’s bogus “research” program:
In what may prove to be a major embarrassment to the Japanese government, the peer-reviewed DNA analysis suggests that distribution of whale meat may be haphazardly managed and that the meat could be flowing into an international smuggling network.
This revelation is unbelievable and inexcusable, and it reveals Japanese whaling to be corrupt from top to bottom. While you’ve always needed to be a major asshole to defend whaling, this week’s news takes the required asshole-ness to a whole new level. Link.
