The Iowa Egg Recall’s Cost in Animal Suffering

This wasn’t posted with an animal rights agenda, but Bill Marler has just tweeted some rough numbers that put the Iowa egg recall in perspective.  It would require more than five million birds ninety days to produce the 380 million eggs that the manufacturer is now seeking to recover and discard.  All of the eggs subject to this recall were produced by chickens confined in battery cages.

That’s 450 million chicken days of confinement, misery, and agony in order to produce a bunch of contaminated eggs that are now being withdrawn from sale.
