I regularly see animal agribusiness interests complain about the high salaries given to senior Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) executives. This is not an argument that favors their side.
I did some digging and came up with some hard numbers that compare HSUS to one of the most prominent groups defending the status quo in factory farming, the Animal Agriculture Alliance.
Total revenues, HSUS, 2009:
$126,650,617 [PDF link]
HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle’s combined salary and benefits, 2009:
Percentage of HSUS total revenues devoted to compensating Wayne Pacelle: 0.198
Total revenues, Animal Agriculture Alliance (AAA), 2009:
$460,598 [registration required.]
AAA Vice President Kay Johnson’s combined salary and benefits, 2009: $103,000 [registration required.]
Percentage of AAA total revenues devoted to compensating Kay Johnson: 22.36
When their compensation is calculated as a percentage of what their respective organizations take in, Johnson outearns Pacelle: 112 to 1. (Thanks, Carrie.)
