USA Food Safety Assessed: It Sucks.

Reviewing the state of food safety in the United States, the Associated Press says that food safety illnesses probably total 87 million Americans a year, with 325,000 people hospitalized and 5000 killed.

Regarding the peanut recall, which officially caused 666 illnesses:

Health officials assume that for every salmonella case, there are three dozen unreported cases. By that calculation, the latest peanut-related outbreak actually has sickened closer to 20,000 people.
