January 6, 2009 Some huge and unexpected news from the meat industry: Tyson Foods’ CEO, Dick Bond, is stepping down. The board of directors won’t comment on whether they gave him the boot.
Over the past few months, I’ve been gleefully following Tyson’s meltdown. All we need is another bump in corn prices and a drop in meat demand, and the company could well be pushed into bankruptcy. Link.
Update: Forbes has some great coverage, including this telling fact: “Not only is Bond’s departure sudden, the company didn’t release the usual statement thanking him for his great years of service.”
January 6, 2009 In a complete lack of irony, Alanis Morissette has gone vegan. She says she’s lost twenty pounds and her allergies have cleared up as well.
I’ve always wondered: when celebrities come out of the vegan closet, how many of their fans get inspired to give vegan eating a try? Now that Oprah’s done so much to talk about vegan eating on her show, I get the feeling that 2009 will be a big year for celebrities going vegan. Link.
January 5, 2009 This is some of the yummiest looking Thai food that I’ve seen in quite a while. Austin TX may not be Portland OR, but it’s not far behind as vegan paradises go.
January 5, 2009 We’re only five days into the new year, but my bet is that this Newsweek article is the most important hunting-related story you’ll see in 2009. The article asserts, with strong evidence to back up its claims, that modern-day hunting practices are giving a survival edge to the least fit members of each hunted species. Since hunters selectively target the biggest, strongest males, it is the smaller and less fit animals that are gaining the advantage when it comes to passing along their genes.
This is a really solid and persuasive anti-hunting argument that every animal rights person needs to know. Link.
January 3, 2009 A Wisconsin man who is accused of shoplifting $365 worth of lobster and $213 worth of beef offered police the excuse that times are tough. Priceless. Link.
January 2, 2009 Since my Ultimate Vegan Guide came out this past Thanksgiving, I’ve already had two people tell me they’ve gone vegan after reading the book. I wrote this guide with the intention that, by the time you’re finished, you’ll know every last thing necessary to gracefully become vegan.
If you’ve already read the book and it’s made vegan living easier for you, please let me know.
January 2, 2009 The New York Times just published the recipe for a vegan variation of a traditional Persian dish.
They’ve also posted a professionally-shot photo. I wonder if anyone here could do better. If anyone tries this in the next day or so, posts their photo to Flickr, and lets me know, I’ll do a blog entry about the photos I receive. Link.
January 2, 2009 I rarely cook with carrots but a photo like this could make that change.
January 2, 2009 A Muslim prisoner in Connecticut has sued the state for not serving halal meat.
What’s interesting about this lawsuit is that the meals served to the prisoner are meatless, and nobody is disputing that they are nutritionally adequate. The state apparently avoids the expense and inconvenience of sourcing halal meat by serving meatless meals to observant Muslims.
So this lawsuit raises at least two useful questions. First, can a prisoner, regardless of religious affiliation, claim a right to be served meat, rather than a nutritionally adequate vegetarian diet? And, second, is the state under an obligation to serve halal meat to Muslim prisoners if it provides conventional meat to its general population? Link.
