A Week as a Vegetarian

Over the past few years, numerous college newspapers in the U.S. have done features in which a reporter tries to go veggie or vegan for about a week. Often, these articles are a disaster: the reporter comes into things hostile to being veggie, makes no effort to discover new foods, and spends the bulk of the series griping about how awful and monotonous a veggie diet is.

That’s not the case this time around, in a series appearing in Michigan State University’s newspaper. The reporter is making a legitimate effort to make the diet work, and is noticing some interesting things along the way. From Day 4:

Today I had more hummus, which is made of a source of “good fat” and more vegetables through a salad, sub sandwich and stir fry. I ideally should increase my fruit intake, but overall I think I did a better job today than I have been doing. I think my entire diet has improved, not necessarily due to being a vegetarian, but because being a vegetarian has caused me to think about what I’m putting into my body more than ever before.

And today, for Day 5:

I’ve noticed an interesting development in my diet. I’m not only getting used to a meatless diet, but the idea of eating meat is starting to make me feel, well, queasy.

It’s cool to read a series like this from somebody who is sincerely trying to thrive during a week as a vegetarian, and who is perceptive enough to point out the interesting things discovered along the way. Day 1 & 2. Day 3. Day 4. Day 5.
