As Economy Tanks, Spam Gains Popularity

It’s common for demand for certain items to pick up during hard economic times, and Spam, being just a step above eating pet food, is one of those items. The Hormel plant that makes the stuff has been going overtime to keep up with surging demand.

This may be the best mainstream media sentence about meat that I’ve seen all year:

Through war and recession, Americans have turned to the glistening canned product from Hormel as a way to save money while still putting something that resembles meat on the table.

Sales of other crap “foods” like Kool-Aid, Jello, and Velveeta have also been growing.

Hormel, Spam’s manufacturer, says, “It’s like meat with a pause button.” Too bad there’s no rewind button. Link.
