BPI Defends Pink Slime

Pink Slime producer BPI’s doomed fact sheet. The whole thing’s stuffed with half-truths that would take me all morning to properly respond to. So instead I’ll just content myself with one brief excerpt:

Myth 8:

Lean finely textured beef (LFTB) is “filler” for ground beef.

Many in the media have begun to describe Lean Finely Textured Beef (LFTB) as “filler” for ground beef.  This is factually inaccurate…LFTB is blended into ground beef, which is required by law to be made exclusively from beef.

Wait a second here: if pink slime is not a filler, why are they blending the stuff into regular ground beef? Why can’t they just make a burger out of 100 percent pink slime?

I’m certainly no authority here, but I’ll hazard a guess: I bet the stuff has the taste or texture of dehydrated cat anus.

In other words, it’s filler—a way for the meat industry to get hamburger prices for non-hamburger grade beef. It’s been a blast watching BPI and meat industry supporters embarrass themselves as they twist definitions in defense of this sorry product. Link.
