Civil Eats has a first rate article on the collapse of Chile’s farmed salmon industry. It’s hard to feel the least bit sorry for those assholes; they brought this on themselves. When their brute force approach to confining fish began to produce disease, the industry decided that moving into virgin waters was the solution. What ended up happening was that, instead of escaping the disease, they spread it everywhere.
Now the industry’s headed to ruin — the country’s salmon production is down 87 percent from last year.
This article is as good as any story I’ve ever seen the New York Times do about food. It gives me hope that as newspapers collapse, online publishers will pick up the slack, at least where food writing is concerned.
