A new government report will push chimpanzee research further to the fringes of science, as it concludes that medical research on the animals can only be justified in two areas: hepatitis C vaccines and monoclonal antibodies. And even here, the report indicates that alternative methods of research may well exist that could render chimpanzee testing unnecessary.
It appears that chimpanzees have just taken a giant step closer to being protected from all medical research. Link.
Update: The New York Times now reports: “The National Institutes of Health on Thursday suspended all new grants for biomedical and behavioral research on chimpanzees and accepted the first uniform criteria for assessing the necessity of such research.”
