I’ve covered colony cages on Vegan.com many times; they amount to a bad faith attempt by egg farmers in America and Germany alike to overcome cruelty objections to battery cages by doing the bare minimum possible to improve hen welfare.
This week, colony cages suffered a giant defeat that could well doom the concept worldwide. German farmed animal campaigner Mahi Klosterhalfen wrote me today with news that the German Constitutional Court has outlawed colony cages, although it’ll still take years to implement this ban. The best news is that Mahi calls this week’s ban, “absolutely non-reversible.”
Josh Balk, who runs the Humane Society’s USA battery egg campaign, called the decision, “The biggest egg industry news of the year.” Link.
