Sam Simon is best known for his early work co-developing The Simpsons, and he is also a cartoonist, producer, director, writer, competitive poker player and boxing manager. He went vegetarian at age 19 and is now an outspoken vegan, philanthropist and champion for animals.
Diagnosed with terminal colorectal cancer in 2012, he was given only a few months to live. Shortly thereafter he arranged to donate his fortune to his favorite charities including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which he has supported for many years. Sam is on PETA’s Executive Committee, and in 2013 PETA named their Norfolk, Virginia headquarters the Sam Simon Center.
Sam is also on the advisory board of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a popular organization fighting to end whale slaughter, and he donated generously to fund the Sea Shepherd’s fourth ship, the Sam Simon. He also founded The Sam Simon Foundation to help dogs as well as people.
